Research

The Department of Dermatology has broad involvement in bench, translational and clinical research. Dr. Harris founded and directs the Vitiligo Clinic and Research Center at UMass Chan, which regularly receives funding from the NIH as well as partners in industry and which continues to lead the way in vitiligo and immune research in dermatology.  Independent of the Vitiligo Research Center, nearly all faculty participate in clinical research ranging from regular contributions to the literature by way of case reports and series to randomized controlled clinical trials to contributions to multicenter consensus guidelines for the specialty.  

Residents are urged to create and contribute to projects that they feel inspired by and are mentored based upon their level of interest.  Most residents have participated in clinical research and other scholarly projects such as preparing case reports, reviewing articles, writing textbook chapters, and developing internet-based teaching materials.  For residents with a strong interest in basic science and translational research, a 2+2 clinical training and research track can be considered.  The residency program has been acknowledged by the Dermatology Residency Review Committee and by our own Graduate Medical Education office for outstanding resident participation in research and scholarly activities.
