Leadership Activities
The UMass Chan Department of Dermatology has a long history of graduates who practice primarily within academic centers or who are highly academically engaged in the private practice setting. One of the many features of the residency that supports academic engagement is the emphasis on building leadership skills and opportunities. Dr. Maloney, former department chair, was largely responsible for creating the American Academy of Dermatology’s Leadership Institute. Almost all of faculty members have received leadership training through the AAD and some faculty members have served on the Leadership Development Steering Committee of the AAD. We have an outside consultant who serves as a leadership coach to our department because of our commitment to developing leaders at all levels. Residents develop their leadership skills early in training with various teaching sessions on topics like wellness and giving great talks. Residents are encouraged to become involved in leadership roles within UMass Memorial Medical Center as well as within regional and national organizations. Past residents have served on the Women’s Dermatologic Society board, on committees of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, and on the editorial board for the JAAD.
