Preventing Diabetic Eye Disease
People with diabetes are at risk for diabetic retinopathy, cataract and glaucoma
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in American adults. It's caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina.
Early detection is important
There are often no visual symptoms in the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, so the American Optometric Association recommends that everyone with diabetes get a comprehensive dilated eye examination once a year.
