Principles of Opioid Use Disorder Care

This course prepares professionals to address the needs of patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).  It is relevant for anyone caring for a patient receiving treatment for OUD with medications such as buprenorphine (Subxone^TM).  Learners are introduced to principles of whole-person care for those living with OUD.  A “low-threshold” approach to treatment is articulated; this is an approach that reduces barriers to starting treatment and staying in treatment. Strategies to provide trauma-informed care and manage psychiatric co-morbidities are discussed.

Professionals who will benefit from this course include, but are not limited to: primary care physicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, clinical social workers, substance use disorder counselors, other mental health providers, nurses, medical assistants, and peer support specialists.  (Please note, this course does not meet requirements for prescribers interested in receiving their DATA waiver or DEA-X number.)

• Prepare caregivers to provide whole-person care of those living with OUD
• Develop inter-professional teams of caregivers who are prepared to care for patients with OUD
• Increase access to evidence-based, low-threshold treatment of patients with OUD
