Clinician burnout has become an alarming epidemic in healthcare, affecting up to 60% of clinicians (Shanafelt et al., 2015). This phenomenon is linked to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and substance use, as well as elevated errors and diminished quality of care. Various factors contribute to burnout, including systemic issues like escalating quality metrics, administrative burdens, and shorter patient visits.
Today, many clinicians find themselves grappling with emotional and physical exhaustion, often feeling isolated from their peers. Those working in Community Health Centers face additional challenges, as they are particularly susceptible to moral injury due to greater socioeconomic pressures and limited patient resources. Despite their commitment to health equity, clinicians in this setting often experience tension between their capacity to meet patients' needs and the risk of moral injury, a factor that may underlie burnout (Kung et al., 2019).
In response to these pressing challenges, CIPC is proud to announce a series of impactful initiatives, including webinars, grand rounds, and a comprehensive five-session CME risk management credit program. To kick off, we will be hosting a free webinar titled "Restoring Balance: An Exploration of Values" on March 1st at noon. Register here.
The centerpiece of our offerings is a five-session program that focuses on Restoring Balance by providing a platform for clinicians to engage in meaningful discussions about the factors leading to burnout and strategies to address both personal and professional challenges. Through coaching, rediscovery of values, and learning about compassion, we aim to offer a skills-based approach to combat burnout.
These programs will be expertly led by the interdisciplinary duo of Shahida Fareed, PsyD, MPH, a Clinical Psychologist Specialist and Director of the Integrated Behavioral Health program in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and Paula Gardiner, MD, MPH, an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Massachusetts School, who directs the group medical visit program at the Center for Integrated Primary Care. Join us in this transformative journey toward restoring balance and well-being in the healthcare profession.
