BEAM Engineering Capstone (Senior Design)

Program Elements:

  • UMass Chan faculty identify design problems affecting their research or patient care
  • Student design teams develop proposed solutions under guidance from the faculty mentor to develop a prototype device suitable for beta testing

Approach:

  • Faculty mentors at Chan are recruited and define the Problem, including medical impact, design constraints, and Solution needs
  • Senior Design instructors at the respective campuses match student teams to projects of interest
  • Over the course of a two-semester Engineering Capstone experience, student design teams develop a prototype Solution.
  • Opportunities for clinical shadowing may be available

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering students at UMass Lowell, UMass Dartmouth, or UMass Amherst
  • Enrolled in Engineering Capstone (Senior Design) course
  • Interested in tackling engineering design problems focused on real-world medical problems
