Resources for Scientists Over 40
Workers over the age of 40 receive special support and guidance at UMass Chan. This is especially important since the scientific workforce has tended to age more rapidly than the general population in the United States1. The implications of this trend on the field are unclear2, but what is clear is that scientists over 40 years of age deserve institutional support in this stage of their lives and careers.
In general, many inclusive and supportive resources can be found on the Diversity and Inclusion Office (DIO) website, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) website, or the Human Relations (HR) website. We have curated some relevant resources from these sources and others below:
The Mature Workforce Committee advocates for faculty and staff over the age of 40. “They are focused on retaining mature worker institutional knowledge while also providing mechanisms to assist retiring employees.” The Committee also maintains a list of Resources for Healthy Aging, which includes:
- The Bancroft School of Massage Therapy in the nearby Community Wellness Clinic. Students undergoing training offer steeply-discounted massages and the Professional Clinic offers specialty massages by licensed and experienced massage therapists.
- The UMass Chan Fitness Center located in the Albert Sherman Center.
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction practices.
The Office of Faculty Affairs provides guidance regarding the transition through retirement.
