This month, Haley sat down with Dr. Renata Silva, a Postdoc in the Flores Kim Lab. Read on to learn more about Renata's life and the unique perspectives they bring to UMass Chan.


Where did you grow up?
I was born in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil, but grew up in a city 3 hours away called Juiz de Fora.

What led you to a career in science?
Science has fascinated me since I was a kid. With time I discovered Microbiology was my passion, and this is what I decided to pursue.

Why did you choose to come to UMass Chan, and why did you choose to stay here?
I chose UMass Chan because of its strong track record in scientific research and collaborative environment. It is a place I believe can help me reach my careers goals. I decided to stay because I fell in love with my research!

How would you spend your time if you never had to work again in your life?
If I never had to work again, I would dedicate my time to starting and running an animal shelter. I’ve always loved animals and want to make a positive impact on their lives.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Anywhere close to my loved ones.

What is your favorite kitchen utensil?
Chef’s Knife.
