Each month the BMB Department features a department member's unique story.
This month, Haley sat down with Kathy Drolet, our brilliant Administrative Coordinator III. Read on to learn more about Kathy's life and the unique perspectives she brings to UMass Chan.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Worcester and grew up in Holden, Massachusetts.
What led you to your current position?
I graduated college with a BA in Business Administration - Marketing. I started my career in marketing in high tech and then moved to the software industry. When I had my second daughter, I decided to be a full-time mom and spent many years taking care of my children and also some other kids. When I wasn't doing that, I wrote a couple of novels, wrote for a local parenting magazine, and sold kitchen tools. I even worked in a cookie factory. Then I got a part-time job at Clark University and spent about six years in the humanities department, which I loved!
Why did you choose to come to UMass Chan and why did you choose to stay here?
I came to UMass seeking a full-time position and started in the RTI in 2021. I began working in BMB in June 2023. I love working in academia because of the vibrant community. Here at UMass it's great to have a small role in the tremendous research that is being done here. It gives the work meaning.
How would you spend your time if you never had to work again in your life?
Sit on the beach in southern France or Italy and write more novels.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Anywhere my kids are....or Laguna Beach, California
What is your favorite kitchen utensil?
I sold kitchen utensils for years; it is hard to pick just one! I do love my citrus press though.
