UMass Chan and MITRE Launch Health AI Assurance Laboratory with MassTech Grant

UMass Chan Medical School and MITRE, a leading operator of federally funded research and development centers, have announced the launch of the Health AI Assurance Laboratory, a collaborative initiative aimed at advancing artificial intelligence in health care for the public good. This initiative is among the first in the United States—and the first in Massachusetts—focused on ensuring that AI technology in health care is safe, effective, and equitable for all users.

The Health AI Assurance Laboratory is led by a distinguished team, including Dr. David McManus, founder of the Program in Digital Medicine and the Richard M. Haidack Professor of Medicine; Dr. Adrian Zai, associate professor of population and quantitative health sciences; and Miles Thompson, AI assurance solutions lead at MITRE. Together, they will collaborate with partners from education, healthcare systems, private industry, nonprofits, and public agencies to rigorously assess specific health AI applications, ensuring their safety, effectiveness, and ethical use.
