Transitions researcher Michelle Mullen, Ph.D., research paper titled "Evaluating Educational and Employment Services for Young People With Psychiatric Conditions: A Systematic Review" was selected for the APA Psychiatric Services Editor's Choice October 2022 collection.
The APA Psychiatric Services Editor, Dr. Lisa Dixon, and the Early Career Psychiatrist Advisory Committee offer curated collections from the rich resources of articles published in the journal.
The October 2022 Editor's Choice collection on supported employment features "Evaluating Educational and Employment Services for Young People With Psychiatric Conditions: A Systematic Review", authored by iSPARC and Transitions researchers Michelle Mullen, Ph.D., Maryann Davis, Ph.D., Marsha Ellison, Ph.D., and Ian Lane, R.N. & Ph.D. student, as well as Judy L. Thompson, Ph.D., Katherine Holloway, M.A., Sean Karyczak, M.S., Megan R. Serody, B.S., and Kenneth J. Gill, Ph.D.
As a part of Michelle's group, Judy Thompson, Ph.D., led the complex project of evaluating the literature to better understand the evidence supporting career development for young adults with mental health conditions. The authors conducted a systematic review of studies evaluating vocational interventions for young people with psychiatric conditions to determine the extent to which services were adapted for young people and whether services promoted gains in postsecondary education and employment.
Congratulations to Michelle, Judy, and the additional authors for helping move the field away from employment-only models and toward career development models as both work and education are incredibly important for young adults with mental health conditions.
